If you can keep pet hair OFF your wool rug and you take good care of your wool floor rug you can keep your rug looking amazing for longer. Scattermats is happy to share a few tips to keep your wool rug looking better for longer.
In general how you care for a rug is determined by two things – the size of your wool rug and by the material it is made from. If you have a quite large wool rug on your floor you would care for it in a similar way to how you would care for wall to wall carpeting.
- Always turn your wool rug – constant foot traffic over the same area or the sun on the same spot of your rug will wear the rug faster, try and turn the rug a few times a year to even the wear out.
- Vacuuming doesn’t always remove pet hair instead use a stiff brush to remove the hair and always brush in the same direction as the nap of your rug.
- If you have a smaller wool rug Scattermats suggest taking it outside and giving it a good shake to remove the dirt.
- If you have a rug that isn’t wool you will need to clean it according to its own individual *needs* – always try and keep care instructions attached to the underside of your rug for reference. Different rugs may need to be cleaned in a different way.
- For sisal, grass and other rugs made from natural fibers or those that have a very open weave can actually let the dirt move through them to the floor underneath. You will need to not only vacuum your natural fiber rug, but you will need to lift them and vacuum underneath them as well. The majority of the natural fiber rugs sold by Scattermats are reversible – if you have rugs of this style every time you vacuum the rug, flip it over this allows the rug a chance to wear evenly.
- If you have hair or fur on your wool rug try sprinkling some unscented talcum powder onto the rug and leave it for a few hours. Then brush the powder through the hair BEFORE taking the rug outside and giving it a good shake.
