Rugs are made all around the world, America is known for its Native American Rugs and The Middle East is known for its Persian or Turkish rugs. You probably don’t give Europe too much thought but it has a wonderful history – especially its history with Turkish rugs.

The styles of Turkish rugs dates back as far as 7000BC and began thanks to the migration between Asia and Europe. Turkey sits on what is known as the *Silk Road* and even today still some styles of Turkish rugs are made by hand. Of course technology has played its hand and many Turkish rugs are being made by machine.

You will find many stunning bold and beautiful Turkish rugs are being designed – some of these great designs you can purchase from Scattermats. To make them far more durable back then Turkish rugs were made with goat hair they also used goat hair when making bedding, however once silk and wool were created and became better known they were used for rug making instead. Wool became a very popular part of Turkish rug making as it left a soft feeling to the rug and made being able to dye the rug various colours so much easier. These new softer rugs were also very strong.

The bold colours that were used for Turkish rugs came from natural sources and were used by making dyes from plants which is why yellows, reds, blues , browns and black were common in the traditional Turkish rug hand made in Turkey, thankfully today any colours can be used.

Scattermats has a range of Turkish and Persian rugs for sale in a variety of colours and sizes.

The patterns used in traditional Turkish rugs were religious symbols and designs – originally when made it was a very nomadic tradition to weave these symbols into the rugs design. Floral patterns and motifs that are geometrical are extremely popular today and often these patterns still had a meaning behind them.

As long as you look after them Turkish Rugs from Scattermats will last a long time.
